About Coal
Coal is a basic fuel and crafting material. One piece burns long enough to smelt eight items in a furnace, blast furnace, or smoker, which makes it a reliable early-game fuel before you have better options like lava or dried kelp blocks. It is also the main ingredient for torches, so you will need a steady supply for lighting.
Coal is used to craft blocks of coal for compact storage, campfires, and fire charges. It cannot be crafted from scratch, but you can break down a coal block back into nine coal.
How to get Coal
The main source is mining coal ore, which generates in stone from the surface down into the deepslate layer. Deepslate coal ore also drops coal. Any pickaxe works, and a Fortune enchantment gives more coal per ore. You will also find coal in chests in many structures, including mineshafts, dungeons, villages, and strongholds. Wither skeletons in nether fortresses drop coal as a common drop, so late-game players sometimes farm them for fuel.
