About Turtle Shell

The Turtle Shell is a wearable helmet made from turtle scutes. It gives the same armor protection as an iron helmet, but its real benefit is underwater breathing.

When you wear one, you gain a short Water Breathing effect every time you come up for air. That gives you extra time underwater before your normal breath runs out. Like other helmets, it can be enchanted, and you can repair it using more scutes.

You can also use a Turtle Shell in a brewing stand to make a Potion of the Turtle Master, which trades speed for strong damage resistance.

How to get the Turtle Shell

You can only get a Turtle Shell by crafting it. You need five scutes arranged in the shape of a helmet.

Scutes are dropped by baby turtles when they grow into adults, not when they are killed. That means you need to breed turtles with seagrass, protect the eggs, and wait for the babies to mature. Turtle Shells are not found in chests or sold by villagers, so raising turtles is the only route.
