About the Map
A map is a tool that records the surface of the world as you explore it. Hold an empty map and use it to create a map of your surroundings. As you walk around holding the map, it fills in terrain, water, and structures you pass. Maps do not show caves or underground areas.
You can zoom a map out at a cartography table by adding paper, copy it to share with friends, or lock it so it no longer updates. Maps are handy for navigation, marking bases, or planning long journeys.
How to get the Map
You can craft an empty map from eight paper and a compass. Compasses need iron and redstone, so a little mining is required first. Cartographer villagers also sell empty maps. Once you have one, use it in your hand to start recording the area.
