About Clay
Clay is a soft, grey-blue material you collect as small balls, not whole blocks. It is mostly useful as a crafting ingredient. You can combine four clay balls into a clay block, which makes storage and building easier. Smelting a clay ball in a furnace gives you a brick, one of the basic materials for brick blocks and flower pots.
How to get Clay
Clay is not crafted. You get it by breaking clay blocks, which drop four clay balls each. Clay blocks usually generate in shallow water in rivers, swamps, and lush caves. You can also find clay balls in some village mason chests. If you want a lot, a riverbed dig is the simplest way, and you can turn the balls back into blocks later.
